Turmeric is an important part of not only the kumaoni culture but India in general. This Himalayan turmeric or Haldi, is harvested every three years during the months of November and December to get a rich yellow. It is a common practice in the Kumaon Himalayas to cultivate turmeric for personal use, either in cooking or religious purposes.
Avani has monetized this practice by collecting home made turmeric roots from local households to provide supplementary income across remote villages. These roots are then dried and grinded into powder using a machine which runs on bio-energy produced by Avani. Thus making the whole process local and green!
